TEANECK — The owners of the John Ackerman house, a Dutch Colonial farmhouse near the Hackensack River dating to the 1700s, want to subdivide the large property on which the home sits to build two houses closer to River Road.

The site is one of the last remaining homes from that era left in Northern New Jersey that has not been enveloped by modern development, said H. Gelfand, the chair of the Bergen County Historic Preservation Committee.

“By allowing the subdivision, what happens is the historic value of the house is drastically diminished,” he said. “We have very few Colonial Era structures that remain and even fewer that remain in essentially intact landscapes.”
